Darwin is tropical. The year divides into a dry season of clear, warm days and a wet season of heat, humidity, heavy rain and spectacular lightning. Cameras must survive the second as well as enjoy the first.
The wet season
Wet season humidity is relentless. Moisture gets into anything not properly sealed, so cable entries, junction boxes and connectors need careful weatherproofing. Condensation inside a housing is common where seals are poor. Check the weather ratings listed on any outdoor camera, and see camera resolution and lens choice for how ratings relate to lens choices.
Lightning is the biggest threat. Strikes near a building can send a surge along power and network cables and damage the recorder, switches and cameras. Surge protection on power and, where practical, on long outdoor network runs is worth considering. A UPS helps with the power side. Where a long cable links two buildings, think about how a surge might travel, and consider fibre or isolated links for those runs.
Cyclone season brings strong winds, so mounting needs to be solid, and a plan for what happens to the system if the property is evacuated is sensible.
Heat, insects and glare
Constant heat shortens the life of electronics. Mount recorders in cooled or at least well-ventilated spaces. A recorder in a hot roof cavity is a poor choice here. Cameras should be shaded where possible.
Insects are a real nuisance. Geckos, spiders and moths gather around infrared lights and lenses, and webs across the lens can trigger movement alerts and blur the picture. Compatible human detection can help cut alerts from insects and wildlife, but features vary depending on the selected camera and recorder. Placement a little away from lights, and occasional cleaning, are practical steps.
During the wet, heavy rain and spray can obscure a lens and create glare at night.
Property types and what people watch
- Elevated tropical homes in Fannie Bay, Parap and Nightcliff, with open under-house areas.
- Suburban houses in Palmerston, Karama and Coconut Grove, with carports and fenced yards.
- Rural-residential blocks in Humpty Doo and Howard Springs, with large acreages and long driveways.
- Apartments in the CBD and Stuart Park under body corporate rules.
- Light-industrial and logistics sites in Winnellie and Berrimah, with yards and vehicle gates.
- Hospitality venues and retail in Casuarina and the CBD.
Rural blocks are where tripwire alerts across a gate or driveway can be useful. See intrusion zones and tripwires setup.
Connectivity and power
Darwin and Palmerston have NBN options, but rural areas often rely on satellite, fixed wireless or mobile data. Those options can be slower and less consistent. The recorder keeps recording to its hard drive regardless of the connection, which is a major reason to choose a recorder-based system over cloud-only. Weather can interrupt power, so a UPS is a sensible addition. See viewing cameras remotely safely.
A sensible system for Darwin
A family home might use four cameras covering the front, under-house area, carport and back yard, with the recorder in an air-conditioned or ventilated room, surge protection on power, and a UPS. A rural property might use a driveway camera with a varifocal lens, a gate tripwire, and a mobile data link for alerts. Businesses in industrial zones often add yard cameras and after-hours intrusion zones. See wired PoE vs wifi cameras to decide between cabling and wireless links on larger sites.

Frequently asked questions
How do I protect cameras from lightning?
Surge protection on power and network cabling helps, and a UPS adds protection. No measure removes the risk entirely.
Why do I get alerts at night from insects?
Insects are drawn to infrared lights. Moving the camera away from lights and using compatible human detection can reduce alerts.
What if the internet is unreliable?
The recorder keeps recording locally. Remote viewing may be slower or interrupted until the connection returns.
Can you install in Darwin?
